Test winner: Bosch AXT 25 TC

Whoever has a lot of trees and bushes in the garden usually dreams of a chopper. Stiftung Warentest has now tested 17 shredders. Find out which shredder did the best in the test here.

Garden shredders are really great. Shrub pruning can be quickly chopped up with such a device. The clippings can then be used in the garden or disposed of. If you have now decided to buy a garden shredder, you will surely ask yourself which one is the right one for you. After all, there are high price and quality differences between the devices. Stiftung Warentest has now taken a closer look at 17 electric shredders. We would like to tell you here how the individual shredders did in the test.

What types of choppers are there?

The choppers hardly differ optically. They all have a funnel-shaped opening into which the clippings are placed and usually also a grass catcher for the shredded wood. The only difference is the technology. There are knife choppers, roller choppers and choppers with a special roller.

" blade shredders work much like a lawn mower. With such a model, the branches and twigs are shredded by a rapidly rotating knife. In addition, the chopped material is usually very heavily shredded.

" rolling chopper have a rotating roller with sharp-edged teeth and a pressure plate. The branches between the roller and the pressure plate are crushed. The great thing about such models is that they feed the chopped material independently.

" At a Chopper with a special roller it is shaped like a funnel and hollow on the inside. The outer surface of the roller rotates past a pressure plate during operation. The wood chips then fall into the interior of the roller. From there, the chopped material continues to slide into the collecting container. These devices also feed the chopped material independently.

Choppers with a special roller impressed in the test

In the meantime, roller choppers are increasingly determining the market. This was taken into account in the test. Stiftung Warentest also tested a new type of chopper. The innovative Bosch AXT 25 TC chopper works with a special razor-sharp roller. In the test, the newcomer particularly impressed with its chopping performance. The chopping performance of the individual devices was determined in a long-term test in which each device had to shred 500 kg of chopped material. This should simulate a load that occurs over the course of several years. Some models faltered in the endurance test or failed completely.

Some models faltered in the test

During the test, two Einhell models failed early. With other roller models, the metal removal on the pressure plate was so high that voids became visible. If branches are stuck in these cavities, this can lead to constipation. The roller choppers from Hornbach, Grizzly and Bosch rarely clogged in the test. And should it happen, then it is not that bad with roller choppers. You have a return.

Devices have become less dangerous
Choppers have become much less dangerous in recent years. For example, some shredders have catch boxes for chopped items with a safety switch. The roller switches off automatically when the container is pulled out. Blockages can be removed without any problems. But there are also devices that pose some dangers, such as the tested device from Gloria and Viking. In the test it happened several times that long branches were thrown out of the opening or branches at head height whipped back and forth. With the Gloria device, however, the clippings should also be shortened to 50 to 60 centimeters.
