Buying a robotic lawnmower is expensive, so it should be well considered. What is important for the robotic lawnmower? Which device is right for me? Our buying tips will help you make the decision.

Lie in the sun at the weekend while the lawn mows alone as if by magic. A really great idea. With the invention of the robotic lawnmower, it is no longer wishful thinking. Despite the still very high price, more and more lawnmower robots are finding their way into private gardens. No wonder when you consider that you no longer have to tiger through the garden with a lawnmower.

As is common in the world of technology, not every robotic lawnmower is the same. For example, there are big differences in the lawn to be mowed. But more on that later. After a few sleepless nights and many pros and cons, my husband and I decided this year to also offer a robotic lawnmower to move into our sacred garden kingdom. The choice was certainly not easy for us. Almost every lawnmower manufacturer has at least one robotic lawnmower, if not more. Finding the right one here was not that easy. The detailed robotic lawnmower comparison onvergleich.org was very helpful for our decision. From a test carried out in 2015, the 5 best robotic lawnmowers were compared directly with each other. This saved us some time because we didn't have to constantly jump back and forth between our individual favorites.

Before a comparison comes into question, you should know what is important when buying a robotic lawnmower and what purchase criteria there are to consider.

»The 7 most important purchase criteria

1. Area performance

The most important criterion when looking for a suitable robotic lawnmower is the area that the device has to manage. Each device is designed differently. With a garden of 1000 m² you need a different mower than with a garden area of 200 m².

For each device, you will find the exact details of the maximum area capacity in the technical details. However, it should be said that in most cases the capacity is not fully reached. You are on the safe side if you calculate plus and minus 20 percent (source :vergleich.org). These fluctuations arise simply from the differences in the nature of the lawn and, of course, the length of the grass.

" My advice: If you are within the limit of the area minus the 20 percent, it is better if you choose the next larger model.

2. Condition of the garden area

Robotic lawnmowers are often advertised that they can do their job on all surfaces. The robot can quickly reach its limits on plots with steep inclines or slopes. Not every device is designed for this. There are even models that are only made for flat surfaces. But the other way around, too, lawnmower robots that can handle inclines and slopes of up to 50 percent.

When buying, be sure to pay attention to the information in the description.

" Important NOTE: Lawnmower robots need their space during "work". If you have installed many obstacles in your garden, you should carefully reconsider the investment. The same applies to children playing in the garden. While working, the device should be able to work freely on the area to be mowed. Many obstacles, pets and children would only unnecessarily stop and block the work.

3. Battery technology

There are also some differences in the batteries. Most robotic lawnmowers have a lithium-ion battery included. These are very light and can be recharged quickly.

But there are also other technologies that are still used primarily in older models. Although these models are significantly cheaper to purchase, they do not cope with so many charging processes. So there comes a time when a new battery needs to be found.
That is why it pays off in the long run to rely on new models with a lithium-ion battery. The purchase price is higher, but pays off over time.

4. Noise development

We all know the sounds of a good old petrol lawnmower. The volume is really not to be missed. Lawnmower robots do their work much more quietly. Here, too, there are serious differences between the individual models.

If you plan to let your robotic lawnmower whiz across the lawn at night, provided the neighborhood allows it, then you should definitely use quiet devices. You will always find the noise data in most product descriptions. These are given in decibels. At the Federal Ministry at bmub.bund.de you will find a clear table with decibel information and its comparable type of noise in everyday life. This makes the comparison much easier.

5. Operation

A very crucial point is the operation of the hardworking helpers. In general, they all work easily and understandably. Depending on the version, different mowing programs can be set on the devices. This is done on a built-in display. For devices from the higher price segment, even with a touchpad.

Most devices cover their area using a boundary wire. The mowing area must be marked in advance with these cables so that the robot knows - up to here and no further. You can also use these cables to stake out areas that the robotic lawnmower should not use.

In this video instruction you can find out in advance how exactly the cables have to be laid and what there is to consider.

But there are also some devices that work without laying the boundary wire. Some of them drive the route using surface recognition. Here the robot has special sensors for grass detection.

6. Security

Security should also be a very important aspect when making a purchase decision. Make sure that your desired device is equipped with safety sensors. These are used, for example, when the robotic lawnmower is raised. The operator must automatically stop mowing immediately to avoid injuring anyone.

" My advice:

Some insurers take the robotic lawnmower into household insurance. But this is far from the case for everyone. The best thing to do in advance is to contact your insurance company.

An anti-theft device is also highly recommended. Only recently did a friend tell me that her robotic lawnmower was stolen in the front yard. This is very annoying, because honestly, whoever is "spoiled" and no longer has to mow his lawn himself, wants a new one as soon as possible. But the devices also cost a lot of money that not everyone just has under their pillows. Anti-theft protection, which often works with a PIN code, is integrated in the newer models today.

Even newer models can even tell the owner the exact location via SMS or GPS. A positive security feature, which also affects the price.

7. Accessories

The topic of accessories is not necessarily the deciding factor, but it is advisable to take a look at the necessary accessories in advance. What does a cheap model do for you if the worn or defective spare parts eat up your budget.

So take a look in advance to find out how expensive a replacement battery, charger or a new knife cost. In this way you will definitely know in advance what you may have to invest sooner or later.
