What causes gaps in the lawn?
- more stress than turf
- lack of care
- Burning due to lawn cutting too short or over fertilization
- pest infestation
- Occurrence of moss and weeds
How can gaps in the lawn be closed?
- lawn grass seeds
- grass patch
❖ Sow lawn© TravelPOIs - Fotolia.com Gaps in the lawn can be reseeded in the conventional way. So you apply lawn seeds to the affected areas and be patient until the lawn grows back and the gap gradually closes. Lawn seeds are preferably planted in March and September. In spring and early autumn there is sufficient rainfall and there are pleasant temperatures to allow the seeds to grow well.
Tip: If you use lawn seeds in spring, the seeds have enough time to develop and develop enough roots.
When reseeding, you should use appropriate seeds. A special reseeding as you e.g. Find here is designed for this purpose and usually grows faster than conventional lawn seeds.
Prepare the lawn for reseeding
The bald spot can be closed better and faster if the surface is first prepared accordingly. The subsoil is usually compacted and should first be loosened up well. If the bald spot has sunk and does not form a straight line with the rest of the lawn, the hole created is filled with earth. You can use conventional garden soil or close the gap with growing soil. This has the advantage of not containing any weeds, which you can inadvertently drag yourself into the lawn by using garden soil. If there is a gap in the lawn because it is too shady, use special seed mixtures for shade lawns, such as available here or are considering giving up lawn entirely at this disadvantageous point.
Tip: Use a scraper or rake to remove weeds and remnants of the old lawn.
If the soil is prepared accordingly, the seed can be distributed. Use the rake or scarifier to work the seeds into the soil.
Lawn on acidic soil?
If there are large gaps in the lawn and you cannot explain the cause, it could be due to the ground itself.
Note: Moss instead of grass grows on acidic soils.
You should know the pH of the soil before taking any further action. The pH value can be determined using simple test kits. These can be purchased in almost every garden center for less than ten euros. If you have determined a pH value below 6, the lawn cannot absorb enough nutrients from the soil. Before closing the gaps in the lawn, you should neutralize the acid in the lawn with the help of soda lime. Please note the quantity information on the packaging. With larger lawns, a spreader can make your job easier.
Fertilize the lawn - but correctly
Lawn seeds and fertilizers do not become friends. If the soil is already sufficiently fertilized, the lawn seed will probably not form any roots and you will wait in vain for the gap in the lawn to close. Some manufacturers of lawn seeds have thought along here and are bringing out seed mixtures that are enriched with fertilizer that only begins to take effect some time after planting.
Tip: Do not fertilize the lawn until six weeks after you have sown it again.
An exception is organic fertilizer, which can already be administered during sowing.
The new lawn also needs sufficient moisture and must not dry out. If the sown grass grows back, it should not be walked on for about six weeks. You should also exercise restraint with the lawnmower. Only when the blades have reached about ten centimeters in height, the blades of grass are shortened to about six centimeters and trimmed to five centimeters after another six weeks.
Close larger gaps in the lawn
Lawn seeds are quickly scattered into a small gap, but what about larger lawns that have become patchy and unsightly? You should prepare the soil first. To do this, dig out about five centimeters of soil and mix the soil with sand, compost and humus. If you have fastened the soil sufficiently, you can spread the lawn seed over a large area. Use a board or a spade to press the seeds well into the ground. Then the seed should be moistened well.
Lawn pavement - better than lawn seed?
Lawn paving is an all-round solution and is also suitable for difficult soils. These special mixtures consist of lawn seeds, fertilizer and a special substrate, which promotes germination even on difficult substrates.
Apply lawn paving - step by step
- Loosen the soil
- Remove weeds and grass debris
- Apply lawn paving
- Irrigate the earth
- Always supply the substrate with sufficient moisture
The soil is first loosened up well. This removes weeds or the remains of dead grass. The lawn paving should be applied to all bald areas evenly and in a layer of about three millimeters. So that the lawn paving begins to germinate quickly, sufficient irrigation is required. First pour carefully. If the germ substrate changes color, it can no longer absorb water and you can stop watering. If the substrate takes on a lighter color, it is a sign that it needs moisture again.

Close gaps in the lawn with a lawn pad
If there are only small gaps in your lawn, the grip on the lawn pad is worthwhile. Here you will find the components of the lawn paving just described concentrated on a pad. The pads are simply placed on the relevant area. This is done in a similar way to a seed band. Loosen the subsoil and clean it sufficiently. The pad is pressed lightly so that it cannot slip.
Tip: The lawn pad must always be adequately hydrated.
Roll turf for repairing larger damaged areas© ikostudio - Fotolia.com If larger gaps have arisen, you won't get very far with a lawn pad. Laying turf is a welcome alternative here. In this way, larger lawn gaps can be easily closed in a short time. As the name suggests, turf can be purchased on wheels. The product is grown in special lawn schools and sold in rolls of one square meter. You have to expect prices of between five and ten euros per square meter. Rolled turf is more expensive than lawn seeds, but also extremely practical. The lawn is easily laid and can be walked on after a few hours.
Lay turf - step by step
What is needed?
- lawn peeler
So that the old lawn can be removed easily, a lawn peeler is ideal. Use a tiller to loosen the soil sufficiently. In order to be able to cut the turf appropriately, a knife that is as sharp as possible is needed. You should have a shovel and wheelbarrow ready for disposal and removal of the old lawn.
Tip: Lawn peelers or tillers can be borrowed from the garden center.
Here's how to do it:
Laying begins on a straight edge. To do this, select the next bed boundary or curbs that have already been placed. Roll out the sheets completely and apply them to the lawn. The individual sheets should be close together, but not overlap. If you need more than one lane, staggered laying is ideal. This principle is also common when laying laminate.
Tip: Avoid gaps and overlaps when laying turf.
After laying the turf, water thoroughly, but make sure that no puddles settle on the lawn. In the first few days, the turf needs more water.
You can walk on your new lawn the evening after it is installed. Use caution, because the lawn can only be fully loaded after about a month. You can mow the turf for the first time after just ten days.
Closing gaps in the lawn with turf - the easy method
Small gaps in the lawn disappear quickly when you use turf. For this you need an unused piece of lawn, which may have gaps. There you prick out the turf of the required size and plant it in the previously loosened soil of the created lawn. Water the new lawn well. After a short time, the turf in the lawn will have grown well and the unwanted gaps will be closed quickly and easily.
