With an insect hotel you can offer the useful insects a nice home and a wonderful place to spend the winter. A hotel or house made from a clay pot is e.g. the ideal living space for earwigs and lacewings.

Why the earwig is useful in the garden

The catchy tune and the fly away are useful insects because they keep the garden and plants clean. For example, earwigs love aphids, which is why they also serve as the main food. If you have a problem with aphids, earwigs can be the ideal helper. It then makes sense to place the earwig house right next to the plants that are most affected. After a short time you will see a significant improvement in the problem.

You need these materials

You don't need a lot of accessories to make a home for earwigs. Since earwigs are satisfied with a little straw and a rainproof housing, the earwig house is built very quickly. For this you need:

  • a large clay pot
  • secateurs
  • Rope or thick cord
  • Onion or potato net or chicken wire
  • straw

You can determine yourself how big the clay pot should be. For example, you can use one large and / or several small clay pots. The earwig houses can then also act as a great garden decoration.

Step by step instructions

Step 1:

Before you start with the actual construction, you should make sure that the clay pot is clean. If it is used, you must first clean it thoroughly.

Step 2:

Now it's getting colorful! Because now you can beautify the catchy tune with waterproof colors. There are no limits to your imagination. You don't necessarily have to paint the clay pot, because earwigs don't care what the facade of their home looks like. Crafts with children, but it is great fun for the little ones to decorate the clay pots with colors. However, always make sure that the colors are waterproof, otherwise they will say goodbye after the first rain. Then let the clay pot dry well.

Step 3:

Now it is important to clarify whether the clay pot should stand on the floor or hang from a tree in the future. If you want to hang up the earwig house, the thick cord is now used. You have to thread these through the hole on the bottom and tie them well on the inside so that the cord can be used as a holder. At the other end of the line you can then form a large loop or tie the insect hotel directly to a tree. If you want to store the clay pot on the floor, no cord is required.

Step 4:

Now the clay pot is filled with straw. You can use a little more straw here. The clay pot may be filled well so that little or no straw falls out when you turn the clay pot over. You can cut the straw with the secateurs and then stuff it into the pot.

Step 5:

Now the onion or potato net is used. So that the straw holds well and does not fall out, you have to stretch it over the opening of the clay pot. This helps the earwigs to slip into the new home more easily. Tighten the net vigorously over the opening and tie it together on one side so that it no longer comes off.

You can also use some chicken wire. Simply slip this over the clay pot opening, fold over the protruding ends of the grille on the outside of the pot and then tie it down. If you are tinkering with children, it is better to use an onion or potato net. Children could eventually injure themselves on the chick wire.

Step 6:

Now the catchy tune is ready. Now you can put it face down on the floor or hang it on a tree. It will not be long before the little insects find their way to their new home.

So you can do it too

Here are a few more tips

❶ Do not try to use chemical agents when cleaning the clay pot.

❷ The colors should be suitable for children, because what does not harm the children does not harm the animals.

❸ Choose the location of the earwig house so that the earwigs live directly at the food source, i.e. the aphids. This has the advantage that the insects feel good and stay in their new home for a long time.

❹ Earwigs are nocturnal and use dawn to hunt. So you don't have to worry that the worms are uninvited guests at lunch. You will rarely see them.

❺ You do not have to check daily whether residents have found the insect hotel. You should leave the clay pot alone, otherwise the earwigs will soon be looking for space again.

Conclusion:

If you have aphid problem, an earwig house is just the thing for your garden. Roses in particular are often affected. The nice thing is that the catchy tune is quick to make and can be decorated so that it becomes a real eye-catcher in the garden. In addition, it costs very little money and is still an effective companion in the fight against aphids. The earwigs will move into their new home quickly, and if you leave them alone they will stay there for a long time. The earwig house is also the perfect place for the animals to spend the winter.

Tip:
You don't just want to lure catchy tunes into the garden and use them as predators, of course? Then build an insect hotel. In no time, bees, ladybugs and butterflies will populate your garden.
