The Tomoffel is a plant that allows you to keep potatoes and tomatoes at the same time. However, there are a few things to consider for a profitable harvest.

You have to calculate a lot of space for growing vegetables. Space that not everyone has to offer in abundance. The solution in this case is combined plants, such as the Tomoffel, for example. Anyone who thinks it's all very complicated is wrong. The exotic from the garden, which is actually not at all, is even very down-to-earth.

The nightshade family is a hybrid that was first bred in Tübingen in the 1970s. This exciting novelty promises the space-saving cultivation of tomatoes and potatoes. This is now even possible with the Tomoffel on the balcony or terrace.

Find the right location

A sunny location creates the ideal conditions for the tomato to thrive. If you want to achieve the highest possible yield, you should not choose the location too shady. Penumbra is tolerated. A warm and sunny location requires regular watering. So that the plants do not bend and can expand unhindered, the hobby gardener should offer them support.

In short:

  • warm
  • sunny
  • bright
  • Plant support necessary

Choose the ideal substrate

Being able to harvest tomatoes and potatoes at the same time is not only a pleasure for the hobby gardener, but also a challenge for the plant. A high-quality substrate creates the basis for healthy growth and rich crop yields. You shouldn't leave anything to chance and rely on high-quality growing media. Special tomato soil also makes the potatoes thrive. In addition, mature compost can be mixed into the substrate as a natural fertilizer. The substrate should still be well drained, as the Tomoffel does not tolerate waterlogging.

" Tip: Too heavy soil can be made more permeable by adding gravel or coarse sand.

In short:

  • nutritious
  • permeable
  • relaxed

Planting a potato - explained step by step

Pre-grown tomato plants will be available in garden specialty stores from April. The young plants, which are around 30 centimeters high, are located in individual plant pots. After buying, you shouldn't start planting right away. Get the plants used to the outside temperatures step by step over a period of about two weeks.

How do I go about planting?

❶ Select location
❷ Provide substrate
❸ Dig out the planting hole
❹ Water the plant
Einsetzen Insert the plant
❻ Top up with tomato soil
❼ Press the floor well
Ang Water the plant

After a sunny location has been found, the planting hole can be excavated. This should be about twice the width and depth of the root ball. If the existing substrate is to be used, it should be provided with compost or horn shavings and the tomato should be planted with tomato fertilizer after planting (my recommendation: Compo long-term fertilizer). You create optimal conditions if the plant is placed in commercially available tomato soil. Then all the necessary nutrients are included, which let both the tomatoes and the potatoes thrive. It is advisable to water the plants before planting. To do this, the tomato is immersed in a bucket of water until there are no more bubbles.

Can Tomoffel be cultivated in a bucket?

Cultivation in a bucket is possible and offers many advantages. From now on, tomatoes and potatoes can also be harvested in a small space. However, keeping them in a bucket means a restriction for the plant compared to outdoor cultivation. The hobby gardener should therefore strive to create ideal growth conditions. This starts with the selection of the planter. The bucket should never be too small or too flat.

" Tip: If the potato harvest is to be as extensive as possible, the planter must have a capacity of at least 40 liters. The diameter should not be less than 50 centimeters.

Container plants have an increased need for water and nutrients. Regular watering should not be missed. Avoid waterlogging. A drainage can help, which is worked into the bottom of the vessel and can consist of clay granulate or gravel.
