Harvesting the Tomoffel - Tips on when, where to store it and how to use it

Harvesting the tomato is a piece of cake. The tasty fruits can be harvested and nibbled between July and October. But be careful with the potato. There are a few things to consider when harvesting.

The tomato is becoming increasingly popular. No wonder, after all, you can harvest not only tomatoes, but also potatoes. A 2in1 plant, so to speak. But this combination is not the only special thing about the plant. The harvest period is also very interesting. This does not seem to end. In the summer, the sweet cherry tomatoes are removed and if the yield of the tomato is running low, the potato harvest is just beginning. Tomoffel - what is it?

Don't worry, you won't have to harvest exotic fruits that you don't like or that you really can't do with. Every vegetable gardener is familiar with the yield of the Tomoffel. The special thing about it - you harvest tomatoes and potatoes on one plant. There is no genetic modification. The unusual new breed resulted solely from refinement.

What are the benefits of picking a tomato?

Grow tomatoes and potatoes? Not everyone has the prerequisites for this. Many gardens are simply too small to plant potato beds. Growing tomatoes on the balcony is possible without restrictions. If you grow tomatoes, you can suddenly be amazed with home-made potatoes without having to show a large garden. The double yield supports space-saving and efficient gardening and always brings surprises to friends and neighbors.

When does the harvest begin?

The tomato harvest period begins around mid-July. If the fruits take on an orange-red color, the watering should be reduced a little so that the tomatoes do not burst due to the water pressure that can build up in the interior of the plant if it is watered excessively.

" Tip: Regular harvesting of the ripe fears supports the ripening process for the other fruits.

In late summer, the tome harvest drops. The herb can then be cut back around September and the potatoes can be harvested at the end of September.

Important: The tomatoes are quite susceptible to fungal diseases. This not only causes leaf discoloration, the fruits are also affected. The tomatoes turn brown and get hard spots. In this case, the fruit can no longer be enjoyed, so the herb can be safely removed. In this case, the potato harvest should wait a little longer. The potatoes can then be removed from the ground about two weeks after pruning.

" Tip: The harvest time can also change and there are still tomatoes on the bush when the first frost threatens. The green tomatoes are then harvested and can ripen in the room.

Harvest and store tomatoes

Once the tomatoes have ripened, they are harvested. The aroma is then particularly intense. Green tomatoes that are saved from the impending frost can ripen in a dark room in the house. Tomatoes don't belong in the fridge. The cold removes the aroma from the fruit.

" Tip: Freshly picked tomatoes will last longer if you remove them from the bush with the stem.

Where to go with the tomato harvest?

Up to 500 cherry tomatoes can be harvested from one plant. Creativity is required because the tomatoes must be processed as soon as possible.

So how about:

  • Tomato salad (can be varied)
  • Tomato soup (can be frozen)
  • Tomato ketchup (can be stored well)
  • Tomato juice (easy to preserve)
  • Tomato puree (easy to dose)

Especially in summer it will not be difficult to bring different dishes with tomatoes on the table, they create a Mediterranean flair and whet your appetite.

Harvest and store potatoes

When the tomato harvest is complete, the tuber hits the collar. First the herb is completely removed. Then the potatoes are dug out of the ground.

" Tip: Only undamaged tubers are really storable and durable, so caution is required when harvesting potatoes.

When picking potatoes, the hoe is often hammered into the ground. The result is a skewered potato, an injured tuber that cannot be stored and must be used up as soon as possible.

The potatoes must be removed gently. The tubers cultivated in the bucket can be dug out by hand because the soil is usually soft enough and not too deep. For potatoes in the field, there are special potato choppers, so that the potatoes are not injured, but are pulled out of the ground by lever movement.

The potatoes are cleaned of dirt and stored in boxes. Storage is dry, dark and frost-free. Here you can bring your harvest over the winter, provided that the storage room meets some requirements. Smaller harvests are easy to lay and can be used up within a few weeks.

What conditions should the storage location have?

  • Frost free
  • dark
  • clean
  • cool
  • airy
  • dry

The optimal storage temperature is around five degrees. If the thermometer falls below it, the tubers taste sweet because the starch it contains has been converted into sugar. If the storage room is too warm, the potatoes start to germinate.

" Tip: Many cellars are too wet, which causes the potatoes to rot.
