If there is not enough daylight when growing, plants need additional light. LED plant light has proven particularly useful.
© andreysha74 / stock.adobe.com If you want to prefer your own vegetables and ornamental plants for the next summer, you should think about the right location. Because not only the right temperature, but also sufficient light decide whether the young plants will open at all and subsequently grow and thrive.

The light requirement of the plants does not stop after growing. In order to bloom profusely or to be able to bear a lot of fruit, every plant needs light, but not all plants get the full sun. Especially the intense sunlight in spring can quickly burn the tender shoots. A place on the windowsill, on the other hand, may have the right temperature to germinate, but the lack of sunlight in January and February often leads to disappointing results when sowing.

What do plants need light for?

Hardly any living being can exist without light. For plants, light is also an important source of energy so that they can grow and thrive. Every plant needs light to be able to convert the nutrients from the water and the soil and the carbon dioxide from the air into sugar and oxygen. Because only through photosynthesis does the plant have the food it needs.

But not all plants need the same amount of light. While plants from the Mediterranean are mostly sun worshipers, ferns that can be found in the thick undergrowth feel comfortable in cool and shady places.

There are also serious differences in germination. While light germs absolutely need sufficient sunlight to germinate, it is impossible for dark germs to form seedlings when they come into contact with light. But as soon as the seedlings are visible, they need the light to grow just as much as light germs.

To protect dark germs from light, the location should not be chosen with direct sunlight and the seed should be planted a few centimeters deep in the earth. The necessary information can be found in the planting instructions. However, if the first tips show up, the seedlings must be brought to a bright location.

Plant light for growing in a greenhouse

In order to be able to successfully grow ornamental and useful plants in the greenhouse, the location and orientation is of considerable importance. An east-west orientation is optimal for sufficient sunlight. Since the sun is still very low in the winter months of January and February and in early spring, house walls, fences or trees should not cast a shadow on the greenhouse. If the optimal location cannot be guaranteed due to the spatial conditions, artificial vegetable light can be used to help.

This does not necessarily require special plant lights. Modern LED lights or fluorescent tubes also do a good job. The illuminance should in any case be 1000 - 1500 lux. The cycle of day and night can be easily simulated with a timer or a timer.

Plant light opportunities

led LampsThey have an optimal light spectrum, since they produce many shades of red and blue, but are somewhat more expensive to purchase.
Sodium vapor lampsTheir color spectrum lies in the yellow-red area, which also results in greater heat development. They are well suited for the flowering phase.
Daylight lampsThey are only of limited suitability for growing plants, as they were designed to illuminate living rooms with natural light.
Energy saving lampsThey also serve more to illuminate rooms and do not bring overly convincing results in plant lighting.
fluorescent tubesIn cold white, they are very similar to natural sunlight and are therefore not only suitable for wintering plants, but also for growing. Very good if a larger area is to be illuminated.

Plant light for growing on the windowsill

If you cannot set up a greenhouse or cold frame, but want to start growing early, use the warmer conditions on the windowsill to prefer your plants. The best location for this is in a south-west orientation. However, since daylight is not yet sufficient for healthy growth, especially in the months of January and February, you should also optimize the conditions on the windowsill with artificial light. Modern LED lights are also suitable as light sources, which can be adjusted to the day-night rhythm using a timer.

" Tip: After the 3rd or 4th leaf, the plants should be placed in an equally bright, but somewhat cooler place so that the plantlets do not “shoot” but become nice and strong.
