So that camellias grow beautifully and bloom abundantly, it is advisable to fertilize them. But be careful! If they are not properly fertilized, they can suffer damage.Camellias are very sensitive plants
Camellias are very sensitive plants and must therefore be fertilized very carefully. You should e.g. only be supplied with fertilizer during the period of their growth. The time of fertilization therefore begins between February and April, precisely when the buds start to bloom. At the end of May at the latest, you must stop fertilizing so that the shoots can mature properly in summer. This also applies to camellias in a bucket.
Which fertilizer do camellias need?
First and foremost, use green manure as flowering fertilizer contains too little nitrogen. It is also advisable to use liquid fertilizer, as this can be absorbed by the plants much faster. For moor bed plants, professionals recommend e.g. Alkrysal - the mineral fertilizer for moor bed plants. The fertilizer is not cheap, but it is particularly economical and long-lasting. However, the optimal effect depends on the correct pouring behavior and the permeability of the substrate floor.
If you have used too much fertilizer, it can happen that the nitrogen salts are washed out far too quickly and only the harmful phosphorus and potassium salts remain. In this case, it is best to use organic fertilizer so that the camellia is not harmed. This releases the nitrogen much more slowly. In this case, rhododendron fertilizer containing guano is recommended. Apply this organic fertilizer only in the amount of a tablespoon once at the beginning of growth and once in early May. As an alternative, we can also recommend fish meal or horn shavings.
What to do if you over-fertilize?
The camellia plants are known for their sensitivity to salt. If you fertilize too much, the leaves may turn black around the edges. So the tissue dies. Timely halving of the fertilizer concentration can help here.
If, on the other hand, you have over-fertilized very much, it is best to wash the plant bale with plenty of water.
