The cranberry is an evergreen, perennial dwarf shrub. It belongs to the blueberry genus and to the heather family. Its pink flowers unfold in June. They move in the wind like the head of a crane. Therefore the plant name "crane berry" was derived, in German "crane berry".
The hardy dwarf shrub grows to a height of 20 centimeters. It covers the ground with many creeping shoots up to 1 meter long. Allow 6 plants for planting a square meter of soil.
Red, sweet and sour berries develop from the flowers and are ready for harvest from September. Similar to cranberries, you can process the delicate fruits in yogurt or curd cheese, as desserts or as a cake topping, in mixed drinks and in salads. But the berries can also be used as compote, jam or fruity sauce.

For the cranberry, choose a sunny place if possible. The small-sized berry bush also thrives in the light shade.
The cranberry needs a moist, humus-rich soil. The crop feels most comfortable on a bog bed. It would be ideal if you worked vigorously fine-grained bark mulch or rhododendron earth into the garden soil before planting.
Watering and fertilizing:
- Since the plant is a shallow root, you should keep the location of your cranberry moist at all times. A mulch layer of bark mulch is highly recommended, as it keeps the moisture in the soil.
- Secure a rich cranberry crop by filling up the nutrient depot for your dwarf shrubs with a blueberry fertilizer in the spring.
Only if you want to shorten long shoots do you use pruning shears after harvesting. Otherwise a cut back is not necessary
